# Labels

> Define the dimensions your organization groups agents and workflows by, such as Industry, Client or Region.

A **label** is a key and a value you attach to an agent or a workflow, such as `Industry: Healthcare` or `Region: EMEA`. Your organization decides which keys exist and, optionally, which values each key allows. Labels work the same way on agents and on workflows, and one key can be used on both.

Use labels for whatever dimension your business reports on: the client an agent was built for, the vertical, the region, the team that owns it, or its stage in a rollout. Adding a new dimension needs no support ticket and no deploy.

## Keys and values

Each label key has:

| Field | What it is |
| - | - |
| **Name** | What people see, such as "Industry". You can change it at any time. |
| **Key** | The identifier used in the API and in list links, such as `industry`. Lowercase letters, digits and underscores, up to 40 characters. It is filled in from the name, and it cannot change after the label is created. |
| **Values** | Either **Any value**, where people type whatever they need, or a list of allowed values, where only those can be set. |
| **Several values** | Off by default. When on, an agent or workflow can carry more than one value for the key, such as `Language: English` and `Language: Spanish`. |

Values are trimmed, so "EMEA" and "EMEA " are always the same value.

### Limits

| Limit | Value |
| - | - |
| Label keys per organization | 20 |
| Allowed values per key | 100 |
| Value length | 64 characters |
| Values on one agent or workflow, for a key with several values | 10 |

<Tip>
  Start with a list of allowed values for any dimension you want to report on. A fixed list keeps "Health care", "Healthcare" and "healthcare" from becoming three groups, and it lets [AI suggestions](/organizing/applying-labels#ai-suggestions) propose values for you.
</Tip>

## Create a label

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open label settings">
    Go to **Settings › Labels**. When no labels exist yet, the label picker on an agent or workflow links there too.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the key">
    Click **New label** and enter a name. Check the generated key, since it cannot change later.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the values">
    Pick **Any value**, or list the allowed values. Paste several at once, one per line.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Allow several values if needed">
    Turn on **Allow several values** if one agent or workflow can have more than one value for this key.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The labels page lists every key with how many agents and workflows use it. Open a key to see each value and its usage.

## Change a label

Open a key from **Settings › Labels** to edit it.

* **Rename the label.** Change its name. The key stays the same.
* **Add values.** Add one or paste several, one per line.
* **Rename a value.** The new value replaces the old one on every agent and workflow that has it, and in every saved view that filters on it. Renaming a value to one that already exists merges the two.
* **Remove a value.** If no agent or workflow uses it, it simply leaves the list. If some do, you are asked to confirm. The value is then removed from all of them and from saved views, together with the list change. Either all of it happens or none of it does.
* **Allow several values.** This can change only while no agent or workflow uses the label.

## Delete a label

Deleting a label removes it from every agent and workflow and from every saved view that filters, sorts or shows a column by it. The confirmation tells you how many agents and workflows carry the label, and asks you to type the key when any do. This cannot be undone.

## Who can manage labels

Creating, changing and deleting label keys needs the `agents:manage` permission. Anyone who can see agents or workflows can see the labels on them and filter by them. See [Applying labels](/organizing/applying-labels#who-can-apply-labels) for who can put labels on agents and workflows.
